Vladimir Derevianko studied ballet at the school of the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. In 1977 he joined the company of the Bolshoi Theater where soon become a principal dancer.
At the Bolshoi Derevianko danced most of the main roles of the classical repertoire. He rehearsed with Galina Ulanova, Vladimir Vassiliev, Raissa Struchkova, Vladimir Nikonov. His partners at Bolshoi: Liudmilla Semenyaka and Ekaterina Maximova. His interpretation of Mercutio in Yuri Grigorovich's Romeo and Juliet is still legendary.
Derevianko came to the attention of the world critic at the International Dance Competition at Varna, Bulgary, in 1978. He was awarded the Gold medal and the Grand Prix. The"Grand Prix is a special award that only Vassiliev, Baryshnikov, Dupond, Guillem had won beside Derevianko.
In 1983 he moves to Europe and he is invited to perform as guest artist with some of the world's most famous companies.
He enjoyed artistically —enriching and regular collaborations with John Neumeier and Uwe Scholz in Europe and with Vladimir Vassiliev and Jury Grigorovitch at the Bolshoi in Moscow.
Derevianko has received numerous prizes and awards: Leonide Massine Award (Positano 1983), Benois de la Danse as best dancer of the year (Moscow, 1994), Nijinsky Awards as best dancer (Kiev, 2001). Honorary Member of the Accademia Medicea (Florence). From 1993 to 2006 he was Ballet Director and Maitre of the Dresden Ballet.
From 2007 to 2010 he was Ballet Director and Maitre of Maggio Danza in Florence.
From 2010 till 2011 he has been a guest Maestro at the Teatro alla Scala of Milan.
In 2012 he created a choreography for the ballet school of Teatro dell'Opera in Rome.
In 2012 he was in the jury of the TV Show Bolshoi Ballet in Russia, very similar to the well known program X-Factor, but dedicated to the world of ballet.
From 2014 till 2016 he has been Maitre and Professeur at the theater Alla Scala of Milan.
In 2016 he was jury in the TV Show Dancing with the Stars in Moscow, Russia.
In 2016 he created a choreography for Accademia Nazionale di Danza in Rome.
